I happened today to come across my copy of the Spiritual Letters of Dom John Chapman, Abbot of Downside. He could have been writing about gay “marriage” – though if fact he was not. In a letter written in 1923, said: “If you describe the Thames Tunnel as going under the (River) Severn, to join Bristol to Cardiff, you are giving a wholly wrong description of it, even if every other detail as to its origin, date, disuse, etc., are all correct; for the essence of the Thames Tunnel is that it is under the Thames.” The essence of marriage is rooted in the complementarity of male and female, made in the creative image and likeness of God. It is that, and it isn’t anything else but that. To apply the term to anything else is either ignorant or disingenuous.
